Re: Good source for 30-30 bullets? I need one...
If you want to have access to ammunition for your 30-30; consider reloading.
It costs about $20 to buy components to reload fired ctg cases. If you have kept your empties, you are halfway there. A Lee Loader is a reloading tool that uses a dipper to measure gunpowder. Primitive, compared to other tools, but they work and are about $10 on Ebay or about $25 new retail. Nice to have a powder scale, but Lee's dippers do work, and they used to sell a set for about $7.50 that enabled a lot of flexibility. A pound of smokeless gunpowder costs about $20. You can load about 230 cartridges in 30-30 with one lb of powder. 100 bullets, which must be FLAT POINT for a tube magazine gun, will cost about $10. 100 primers, which ignite the powder, cost about $2. Just looking at the Sierra Bullets manual, they sell a 125 grain flat point hollow point bullet made especially for the 30-30. That would work nicely on deer and about any varmints you needed to dispatch. Maybe you can buy this bullet in factory ammunition, I don't know. Yet, reloading gives you a versatilty you just can't achieve buying your ammunition. The 30-30 is a moderate velocity round, but with a 125 grain bullet, it gets going 2500 feet per second. Consider that a 270 Winchester commonly uses a 130 grain bullet at about 2900 fps, and you will see, reloading enables you to transform old betsy into a bonafide hi-power rifle. If you have to buy your empty brass cases, look for them in bulk, a bag of 100 should cost about $20. You might find a bunch on Ebay even cheaper. Once fired cases are pretty inexpensive and will work fine. The brass case represents half your cost when purchasing factory loaded ammunition. Seems a shame not to have a way to reload it and save money. If you keep gunpowder and primers dry and keep them at temperatures you would be comfortable in, they will last for 20 or 30 years. Gunpowder is not an explosive. It is safe to store. Lee Engineering also sells inexpensive bullet casting moulds. For another $18 and a few bucks for a melting pot and ladle, if you had some wheelweights, you could be making ammunition for yourself for a long time. You can likely buy a lot of scrap lead for about $35. Casting bullets is not a lot of fun, but the price is right. Just some ideas for you to kick around. 30-30 is one of the most popular cartridges in America. If you can keep your neighbors shooting, you will have something to barter. |

Re: Good source for 30-30 bullets? I need one...
If you want 400 rounds:
Buy an 8lb cannister of powder; about $80-$90 Buy a case of primers, 1,000 for $20 buy primers and powder locally, unless you don't mind a $20 hazmat delivery fee from UPS. Buy 500 new or once fired ctg cases, $40 on Ebay $87 NEW Unfired Remington Brass from Graf's (free shipping) Ask Graf's about bulk 150 grain 30-30 bullets from Remington. Likely about $65 per 1,000 About $300 will buy you enough components to assemble 500 loaded cartridges and reload them once. On the cheap, going through Ebay, and buying a bullet mould, you can likely cut your cost down to under $200. |

Re: Good source for 30-30 bullets? I need one...
Think I have about 140 rounds of 30-30 right now, think 500 or so should do me,have a wide variety of shotgun shells and rifled slugs, gee that shotgun sure does it all,and have a pretty good supply of .22 in various sizes, handgun and rifles.
This is for the preps,Ive got most everything else prep wise completed, but can never have enough food,so thats a continual process. As for the guns, you can just go nuts on em,I finally just had to stop, getting to the point of overloaded AND overspending.Got what I want pretty much configured as I want in that respect. Dang, did I mention I REALLY like that Remington 870???? Still might get me a semi auto shotgun too,I know the wife would love it.Seriously, she is major gun nut nowadays. Spuds:sheep: |
Re: Good source for 30-30 bullets? I need one...
Walmart has them here.....usually a dozen or more boxes on the shelf....second only to 30.06 in that caliber range. I usually pick up a couple of boxes of Remington 30.06 every time I'm in Walmart. FRN 12.94/box 20

Re: Good source for 30-30 bullets? I need one...
Spuds,
When I was in 8th grade, my uncle sold me a rifle and it came with a Lee Loader. A year later, Dad bought my brother and I some Lyman 310 tools. 5 years later, I bought my first press and 7/8 x 14 dies. I still have the Lyman All American turret press and Lyman carbide die set. The stuff lasts forever. Also the 310 tools. Find out about a Lee Loader, for the money it enables you to make or reload cartridges without any hassle. It just takes longer. There is nothing to learn, actually. The first time you load or reload you will see. The only real caution is to buy the right powder for your cartridge. There are a variety out there, mainly differing by burning rates. Smokeless powder does not explode, it burns at a uniform rate to produce pressure. Ask the dealer which powder is most flexible for the 30-30. IMR, Alliant, Hogdon, and Accurate are all very good. You might find Accurate powder for your ctg on sale at $65 or less for 8 lbs if you check out Natchezz or Widener's. If you can change the spark plug on a lawnmower, you can use a Lee Loader. You can also reload shotgun shells. Just be sure to buy FLAT POINT bullets for a tube magazine lever action rifle, unless you have a Remington 788, or don't mind loading your ctgs one in the chamber and only one in the magazine. With typical Spitzer or pointed tip bullets, there is danger of igniting primers in the tube mag during recoil or dropping the rifle. Whenever you have a round or cartridge chambered, folks, don't trust the gun's safety! Always assume a gun is loaded and never point that barrel at something (someone) you're not willing to kill or ruin. You might find, spuds, that your reloading gear and supplies are worth more than your PMs. After all, you can't eat Silver or Gold; but Lead can feed you and save your life. |

Re: Good source for 30-30 bullets? I need one...
Yah, Sportsmans Guide DOES have a wide selection and is normally priced fairly. Not super cheap, but fairly.
Caveat is once you buy something from them, you will start receiving their catalogs. If nothing else, they are great for starting a fire. Roll it up. Tie it off with twine and you have a mini log that burn pretty well. Starts most log fires. |
